NEW ORLEANS, January 27, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Herzing University, an accredited private, nonprofit institution, today announced that it has been awarded a three-year contract, $1.5 million federal grant to help improve education, training and professional support services for selected students in the nursing and sterile treatment program in the New Orleans Region.
Herzing University students Southeast Louisiana region could be eligible for assistance which helps to pay a large part of their tuition fees.
“Our current and future students will benefit from this generous bursary, which will help fill critical nursing and sterilization job shortages in the New Orleans region,” said campus president Herzing-New Orleans Jamie Hardage. “We thank local healthcare and labor organizations for their support in this grant application, including the Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission (JEDCO).”
The Workforce Opportunity for Rural Communities Initiative (WORC) was awarded by the US Department of Labor (DOL) in partnership with the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Delta Regional Authority.
The awarding of this grant enables the creation of Herzing WORCS (HUWORCS), a three-level workforce training program tailored to meet the education and training requirements of a variety of prospective students with varied educational and professional backgrounds.
The program will address two critical needs:
- Provide vocational training to new entrants to the labor market, displaced workers and existing workers so that they can participate in economic prosperity and gain gainful employment; and
- Reduce the regional shortage of health professionals in high-demand careers
The Delta region has been deeply affected by the challenges of unemployment, per capita income, level of education and overall poverty, while COVID-19 and the recent Hurricane Ida disaster have exacerbated the need for primary care providers, support staff and mental health experts.
Jefferson Parish and surrounding communities have a diverse population with 48% of residents identifying as non-white when registering with Herzing’s New Orleans The campus is 75% people of color, 89% women, and a median age of 31. The HUWORCS program will aim to align their enrollment with these demographics. Herzing will rely on input from the Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission (JEDCO) and health partners to meet documented regional needs, providing technical and soft skills training where possible.

HUWORCS will accept students from all eligible categories. A HUWORCS enrollment coordinator will focus on dislocated workers, with an emphasis on hospitality workers, dislocated energy workers, and tenured RNs interested in entering the mental health field as part of a vertical career change. The program will enable 150 students to receive student support services, scholarships and other assistance to enroll in a life-changing healthcare training program that delivers meaningful and meaningful results. measurable for the Delta region.
The HUWORCS grant was part of a grant package totaling $29,175,000 scattered in 23 organizations across the Appalachian and Delta regions.
