Bierman Autism Centers Support Assistance Canine Training Services (ACTS)

Recently, the Warren, RI location of Bierman Autism Centers chose Assistance Canine Training Services (ACTS) of North Conway, NH to receive a donation in honor of Freesia, their service dog. Giving back to the community is part of a holiday tradition at Bierman and each site team chooses who will be the recipient. Warren’s site has chosen to recognize the work done by Freesia in supporting ACTS.

Freesia was raised by volunteers Steven Hayden and Monica Philbin of Meredith, NH and completed a two-year training program with ACTS. She teamed up with Maeve London, an occupational therapist working with children diagnosed with autism at Bierman last November. Since then, Freesia has been changing lives and helping people on a daily basis.

Maeve shared, “Working with Freesia has enhanced my therapy in countless ways; ACTS did a fantastic job preparing her to work with children. Whether she’s donning a costume to target clothing skills, catching a pitched ball for upper limb coordination, or “reading” obedience orders written by clients, Freesia increases engagement and therapeutic results. As everyone’s favorite colleague, Freesia cheers up and enthusiastically supports her team. I am forever grateful to ACTS and Bierman for making this partnership possible, and to Freesia for being the best therapist on all fours!”

Kathy Metz, Executive Director of ACTS, expressed her gratitude for the Center’s support: “We are proud of the work done by Freesia and are very grateful to the staff of the Bierman Center for choosing ACTS as their recipient of their donation. While our service dogs profoundly affect the life of one person, our installation dogs affect the lives of many. Freesia is a wonderful example of the important work done by our ACTS dogs.
